Yacht Charters to Halki
Chalki is the largest of a group of islets to the west of well-known Rhodes Island. If you want to take a vacation where you can unwind and recharge in an environment that is representative of the islands in the Aegean Sea, we highly suggest this spot. The island of Chalki is unassuming and steeped in history. It was named after the ancient copper mines (Chalkos is Greek for copper) that had been in operation there since prehistoric times. The structures were built during a period of economic expansion on the island in the second half of the nineteenth century, when trade and sponge harvesting were major sources of income. The whole Dodecanese archipelago, including Chalki, was under Italian control from 1912 until 1948, when it was officially annexed by Greece.
Nimporio (or Emporeio), the sole settlement on Chalki, is situated beside the harbour and up the hill, and it is stunning as you approach the natural harbour. While there aren’t many automobiles available on Chalki, you likely won’t need one due to the island’s compact size and short distances. Take a trip around the town and you’ll see neoclassical stone mansions with two or three stories and the most incredible yards you’ve ever seen, with the ground covered in chochlakia, or black and white pebbles arranged in stunning mosaic patterns. The colorful buildings and rooftops provide for a fantastic setting. Town Hall, a neoclassical white edifice from the 19th century, may be seen next to the massive stone Clock Tower. The towering bell tower of the Church of Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas, the island’s patron saint) dates back to 1861. There are beautiful paintings and a wooden icon screen within the church. Check out the church’s little exhibit of religious artifacts. The Folk Art Museum, housed in the Traditional House of Chalki, provides an in-depth look at the region’s cultural history via displays of traditional furnishings, embroidery, and kitchen implements. A Historic Town status has been bestowed onto Nimporio.
Choose the beach on Chalki Island that best suits your preferences, whether that be a sandy or pebbly one. If there is no road access, you can get there via bus, automobile, or boat. Pontamos beach (SE) is perfect for families with young children because to its shallow waves and beautiful, white sand. Beautiful pebbly beaches accessible only by boat may be found to the north at Areta, Agios Georgios, Dyo Gyaloi, and Pyrgos. Visit the beaches of Ftenagia in the southeast and Kania in the east as well. To the south, you’ll find the pebbly Giali beach and the sandy Tracheia peninsula, which together resemble the bottle’s narrow neck. In just a few minutes on foot, you may be at the opposite location.
If you’re interested in diving, there’s a place where you can obtain the gear you need and take lessons from a pro. The seas near Chalki are so clear that you can see the bottom from as far down as 40 meters—it will blow your mind. Kids and adults alike may enjoy the area’s many attractions while exploring the seafloor, underwater caverns, and shipwrecks. You may either charter your own private boat or hop aboard one of the local boats that does day trips to the islets east of Chalki.
